Speaker 1:And welcome to another episode of the GamerHeads podcast. My name is Roger. along with me are my good friends and co-host I have Mike.
Speaker 3:Hello, hello.
Speaker 1:And Phil welcome, And we have a very special guest with us this week. We have Jeff Moonen. He is a voice actor, musician and co-creator and co-producer of the Fun and Games podcast And member of Choir Fly. Is that pronounced that correct?
Speaker 4:You did pronounce that correctly, yes. Like oh good acapella groups. It is a pun.
Speaker 3:And this one is a nerdy acapella group.
Speaker 4:And no, that's not just nerds. Because of acapella We sing nerd themed acapella Choir.
Speaker 1:Fly. I love it. Well, welcome, Jeff, to the show.
Speaker 4:Thank you so much. Thank you for having me.
Speaker 1:Yeah, i was joking off air because we had Matt on about two weeks ago And they said you should reach out to Jeff and have him on the show. And I said to you I said I'm sorry you can play Matt for you being here, because, yeah, i'm sorry.
Speaker 4:And I said no worries, Apologizing is mutual.
Speaker 1:Well, Jeff, tell us about yourself All right.
Speaker 4:Well then, you described a lot of what I do very well in the header there. Yeah, i am an actor, a voice actor, nothing so glamorous as being like you can hear me in these games or this, whatever I do a lot of the. I don't need fame, i just need to work. So I do a lot of like telephone messages and explainer videos and things like that. So you know, you call the right law firm in New Jersey and it'll be me in a low sample rate, apologizing for the wait.
Speaker 4:Thank you so much for calling kind of thing And all that fun stuff. Not that I don't want to do animation and video games, it's just that's the work that I get. And I also just started working on a rehearsal start next week for an immersive theater production. That's probably closer to working in video games than voice acting for me, wow.
Speaker 4:But, yeah, it is a production called Future Proof. I've been with them since 2017. This is our first production back since well, since early 2020. And it's a production that the choices made by the audience and the audience gets to make choices throughout affects the storyline moving from event to event.
Speaker 1:That's cool.
Speaker 4:I'm very proud of it. The tentpole productions that we used to do were choose your own adventure film screenings, where the production team would make these intentionally bad movies And you go to the show, you go into a theater screening and you would go onto the Wi-Fi or our network on your phone and periodically, through the movie, you could vote to change the movie.
Speaker 3:Do you want to turn this?
Speaker 4:you could vote. Do you want to make this action movie puppets or a shower scene? It's puppets, they're all puppets. If it's a shower scene, they're in the same costumes, delivering the same dialogue, but they're in a high school locker room.
Speaker 1:Oh, my goodness.
Speaker 4:And these things add up and there's a whole weird meta fiction to it all. And I played for the longest time the Android spokesperson for the film distribution company, so the so Future Proof actually came out with a visual novel in early 2021, i believe there was no voice acting in it, but I do make it a physical appearance as one of the characters. Wow, very silly thing. And so there's a lot of. We've had game designers and writers and all sorts of folks like that that are involved in the writing of this so that people can get the mechanisms of who you talk to and what you solve, and it's almost a little bit of an escape room kind of feel, along with the bigger Yeah.
Speaker 1:That's cool. So like is there a lot of like, like kind of ad-lib along with that, Or?
Speaker 4:like thinking about it completely. Yeah, yeah, very much so. You have your character, you have what's going on, but you need to be able to deliver what the, whatever the narrative is, or the deep lore that this universe absolutely has. It did when I first joined it, when it started, and it's only gotten deeper, but they've also gotten a lot better about delivering it in small and fun ways And so, yeah, you've got to be able to do that.
Speaker 4:You have certain things to fall back on. It is a little bit of it's not when one says improv. It's not like a who's line, is it anyway, kind of thing. But it is very much a thinking on your fee. Immersive theater It's not audience in the seats and people up on stage. It's a lot of interactions, conversations that happen. You are playing an NPC in it in a point, in clicking more or less.
Speaker 4:Wow, that's so cool. It's a lot of fun and it is a bit. It's definitely one of those kinds of challenges that, before getting ready and gearing up and reading out for the next steps that we're doing, the show business realm that I was like oh man, this is going to be exhausting, I don't know what I'm doing, but you get back to it and it's oh right, no, no, it is a weird thinking on your feet and it's a lot of fun.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but that's really cool.
Speaker 4:Oh, thank you. No, I'm very excited to get back to it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I used to do community theater and we did Clue the Musical and I like oh, it's not a good musical.
Speaker 4:It's not a good musical, I know but the thing is the impulse to adapt. Clue to the stage is there are a few things more honest and pure in this world. Whether or not you do a good job of it. Who can say? many people can say and will say but the impulse is so good.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, but what was cool about that was that the killer was different every night.
Speaker 4:Oh nice.
Speaker 1:And because they would draw cards in the beginning of the game. So we had like or being at the play and we had big cards of the weapons and the rooms and the suspects, right. So then, as you're watching the musical you're supposed to like, try to figure out who did it. And really the only thing that changed was at the end. If your character got drawn as the killer, like, you had to give a different line. You had to actually have a monologue around why you did it. Blah, blah, blah, and every practice, every practice we did, we never had. I was Professor Plum and we never had me as the killer.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah. And then, of course, opening night. I get selected and I'm like, oh, i don't know the lines And I, at the intermission, i'm learning my lines.
Speaker 4:Oh, that's all. That is so real. So those film screenings that we would do one of the big dumb action movie that we made, that one, the we have all of these also have a stage in front of it because there's live aspects.
Speaker 2:There's actors.
Speaker 4:they're playing the ushers in the theater And that one we had, as you would vote for segments of a director Q&A where most film screenings would wait till after the movie to show you that.
Speaker 4:But we hear it. Lux don't think that's immediate enough. So you'd vote throughout and I would come out on stage and we would do these things. And, oh, absolute, every single one of those had two different versions, with some slight variations here and there depending upon previous votes. And so, oh yeah, there was definitely one of those like the fifth or sixth of seven choices. I rehearsed one of those scenes to the teeth, to the nine, to the syllables.
Speaker 4:The other one we ran it once and it's just like so Jeff you got this. Please make the other one sound more enticing to people. Thank you.
Speaker 1:That's right, that's always the one that you never practice. You're like come on, are you kidding me Really? And you know what.
Speaker 4:By the time someone voted for it. I'd learned the scene and we had a chance to rehearse it. But that was one of the you know how it is Like you run those rehearsals there's always a scene that's kind of a.
Speaker 1:We'll fix it in post of live performance Yes, yes, agreed, agreed, oh my goodness. And especially in community theater, right? Like I mean I don't know, like they don't right, it's like I'm not getting paid for this, so whatever.
Speaker 4:No absolutely.
Speaker 2:Even in professional theater, half the time we're not getting paid for this.
Speaker 4:But we believe in it. Don't you believe in the production? I haven't done that in a while and I won't name names, but it's, you get all kinds. But on the more video game side of things you had my co-producer on here before Matt.
Speaker 3:Storm.
Speaker 4:And.
Speaker 4:I am not on nearly as many podcasts as Matt. I am only on the Fun and Games podcast on the certain POV network. If you weren't listeners, if you weren't here for the episode with Matt Storm, Fun and Games podcast is a video games podcast sort of, about the media, medium and culture of video gaming. We've had interviews with all kinds of great creators within the video game industry and a few outside of it as well, that have wonderful viewpoints on different series of games, different tropes and concepts and the evolution of our personal experience with games and gaming, Because none of us can play every single video game that's out there. That wasn't true when we were kids and it's even more true nowadays, But why should we shame anybody for not having played your favorite game yet? We should bring an optimistic view to games. Talk about the games we love. We don't need to spend hours bashing games that don't please us, don't make us happy. Share the things we love, And that's also where our side show, side quest came from, where we have a different host every episode spending five to 15 minutes talking about a game they love.
Speaker 4:Why they love it, whether it's an empirically good game and here's why or it reminds me of a special time in my life, or was it saved me at some point, something like that. We've gotten all of those stories and so much more And they're frankly fantastic. And I will say I've joked and I mean it. Side quest is Matt. I contributed 7% to side quests. I composed the music.
Speaker 4:It's better than 5%, So I mean there you go.
Speaker 1:No, absolutely, i composed the intro music.
Speaker 4:I recorded the opening there. I sometimes handle a little bit of back and forth, But, and more than anything, I think that last 2% is when Matt first had the idea. he called me and just was is this a dumb idea? Is this a bad idea? Is all that kind of talking your friend down the ledge? That was all they needed. They just needed to be assured that this is going to be great, and look where it's gone.
Speaker 1:It's incredible.
Speaker 4:And. I'm overjoyed that I even had that much of a contribution to this great thing that I share, with which I share a feed, yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, no, i love your podcast. The last episode I listened to was the FOMO one And I loved that. I mean, like it's what you guys were talking about, like you know the like when a game comes out and it's like you feel like you have to be the first one playing that, and it was. It's such a good, it's just so such an honest conversation between both of you. I just love that about your podcast.
Speaker 4:Thank you very much. That's that's, honestly, more or less our goal. We definitely make an honest play at being games journalists And I mean that honest and play But more than anything, we want to just share our own personal experiences and discoveries throughout our lives as gamers and hope that resonates with people And that, yeah, you get that same feeling where it's like why do I need this immediately, or who am I going to be sharing this experience with? I mean that one, the for FOMO and gaming. We came to the conclusion where you can get to a game late, but if you, so long as you've got some other people with whom to share it it feels incredible.
Speaker 4:Yeah, i've been playing a lot nowadays. I have over lockdown and now into just regular ish nowadays life. I started doing a weekly gaming with old college friends of mine. We've all scattered and we started because we're excited about Baldur's Gate 3. And as soon as it comes out we're going for it.
Speaker 4:Yeah, in the meantime, we've just been finding other multiplayer storytelling or RPG games. That's how I finally played through Divinity, Original Sin 2. We played Wildermouth. Right now, Every other week we're doing either Gloom Haven or Diablo 4. And there's an older game and a newer game on that And it's and I love the Diablo series, but I think it's so much the better because I'm getting to share it with those people.
Speaker 4:And that's the FOMO that I really go for. It's the people I share it with. not Look, I did buy Final Fantasy 16 the day it came out.
Speaker 3:I installed all of the data.
Speaker 4:I haven't played it yet. I've been busy.
Speaker 1:We don't know what that's like, and I feel like the other side of this.
Speaker 4:No, I don't know what this is like at all. We also bought Tears of the Kingdom first day. But the reason I haven't played? that is a very good one And it's because my spouse is currently playing it And I am not taking that away from her.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah. That's funny because, like Mike has, mike, you have a lot of games on your, on your that you buy And I say, have you played this game yet? And usually it's nope, it's waiting to be played, right.
Speaker 3:I can attest to this.
Speaker 4:The backlog is storied, insurmountable and very real. Yes, Yes, yeah, and I'm very much a physical game collector.
Speaker 3:So between my spouse.
Speaker 4:So between Sarah, my spouse and I, we're both very avid gamers, very avid collectors. We have, at this point, over 1400 physical video games in our New York City apartment.
Speaker 3:Oh my gosh In New.
Speaker 4:York City apartment. Well, we're both huge nerds and very early she and I have been together for about 13 years at this point And early on in our relationship it was kind of a look If we are left unhinged and untethered, we will collect everything and we will have no room. Decisions must be made and we chose video games. I regret nothing.
Speaker 1:Wow, How do you have room for that? I mean, I don't know. I the way Midwesterners view New York City is probably like you have, like I don't know, like 600 square foot apartment, 850.
Speaker 4:Oh.
Speaker 1:I'm sorry, i'm sorry 850.
Speaker 4:We have two doors, one for the bathroom and one for the bedroom.
Speaker 1:Luxury.
Speaker 4:Where do you find room for all that? So I built custom shelves along one wall of my living room.
Speaker 1:Okay.
Speaker 4:I think it was before we started recording aforementioned vague handy skills picked over, picked up over the years. Don't trust me to do like renovations or be part of a crew, but I could build some straight shelves and measure them out so that, all right, these ones are going to hold the Sega CD games, and only these ones, because, god, those things are tall and fragile.
Speaker 1:Do you have a complete collection of any system, or is that a plan of yours to do that?
Speaker 4:If you don't, that's not necessarily a plan. I don't, okay, no, it's a great question And for some, when you Well, at whatever point, where you go, like, alright, i don't just have a lot of video games, i am a video game collector you do have to answer those questions for yourself. Is there a system, a series, a franchise, a developer, whatever it is, that I want to complete? and, by and large, sarah and I are Sort of no, absolutely not, there's. So I mean certainly for game, for a console's complete library. There's so many games We don't want to play. Yeah, we and much like what fun and games is? I bring that same attitude to my collecting. There's games that I get because they're important, because I feel I will play them eventually, or I want them to be available to me and available to lend out to others, because we also do lend out our games to Friends of ours in the neighborhood, or we go visit somebody Oh no, you need that. Here you go like we're done with this.
Speaker 1:Very brave of you.
Speaker 4:It's listen. if they're the really expensive games, i track them no like a chipper, anything but just a. I Maintain a Google spreadsheet where there's that certain amount of like. So you've had Eternal darkness for Two years, four months and three days. How's the battle against Zelotath?
Speaker 4:going yeah, yeah, right, right, kind of thing It's. It's ever been that bad, but there's some of that and there's some of what are the games that I grew up with, that Sarah grew up with, that we're getting back, or Because I in college sold about 95% of my video game collection.
Speaker 4:I was getting it that I was young, dumb, needed the money and thought that it was the adult thing to do. Yeah, so it's meant for a lot of fun of like getting to go around, and eternal darkness is actually one of those games that I sold for My old collection that I regretted terribly. That in the past few years made its way back then it's getting. That joy is incredible.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, yeah, i get that because I mean I was the same way. I sold all myself and now my wife. Oh no need all these systems. I mean, since I'm an adult now, well, no, i'm keeping these systems like well, why? why do you need to have a PlayStation 2?
Speaker 4:because I do Right because is a DVD player, because it plays ps1 and ps2 games, because it was the greatest selling, the highest selling system ever.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I'm a part of history?
Speaker 4:Is that the? is that the system? Melodrama side is that the system that you like most are collecting for right now, or that you're most like? I need to get these games for me, yeah yeah, no, i'm not.
Speaker 1:I wouldn't say like I'm a collector, like I don't collect games, i just have. I just, you know, when I have a system, i just don't want to sell it anymore because I don't want just to go. Now I got like five.
Speaker 4:That's real for it right.
Speaker 1:So like real so it just sits there. It sits and I mean in you know, in truth, be told, like it does collect dust, not always like there's some systems. I'm like now I have three kids, so I'm like, hey, you can like learn about, you know, these games and you can play them on the systems And they're like. It was funny when I took to my daughter who's who's, who just turned 12, i took her to a Mario Kart tournament Yeah, and I'm old, by the way, and and I took her to a Mario Kart tournament and it was just the funniest thing, heard her friend, you got to play in all the different systems and one of us and 64 and they said, oh god, these graphics are terrible. I'm say, hey, whoa, whoa whoa, whoa, whoa Terrible.
Speaker 4:I will accept dated.
Speaker 1:I will accept smearing. Yeah, it's funny, right, but it's funny and it's it is. I know it's so like, so like. For me It's it's more of like you know, and also I'm just like well, maybe I'll play this game at some time and and then it sits in, you know whatever.
Speaker 4:Oh, absolutely Well, and I mean to the idea of having kids and stuff. I don't have any kids And so many of my friends from from the old country of New Jersey that Are having kids My apartment has become the farm upstate for them to leave their systems And and like look if, if they need the money for it, if they want me to sell it, i will go through the trouble of selling it and take a small cut and they get the money.
Speaker 4:But this is also why I now have a 32 X in my life And I don't regret it.
Speaker 1:It's delightful Yeah.
Speaker 4:I got to have the very fun thing where Sarah was a Nintendo kid growing up in so many ways, and so there's a lot of fun series and things were. You know, i never feel like I'm gonna use the horrible term, i never feel like I'm married to a fake gamer girl or anything like that, but we all have our Oh. I know the series and know this one, but I can't know all of them.
Speaker 4:Hmm you know she didn't know Final Fantasy. She thought she didn't like RPGs growing up and now We're excited to play FF 16 together Cool, But she didn't play Sonic games. And so we had the Sega CD and we just got in the 32 X. She played Sonic CD for the first time. She grew up on Mario. This Sonic CD is easily the most Mario paste Sonic platformer. She loved it. She she never repeats games. She played it twice.
Speaker 4:Wow, get the best ending we put in Yeah yeah, it was so cool We put in Chaotix. I don't think I've ever seen her this angry at a video game in my life. It's like you know Sonic CD Yeah, the opposite of that Randomized levels, weird physics puzzles like stop. it starts being oh, she was like Angry, angry, it was incredible. Wow you know I gotta keep the 32 X around. It's funny. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:No, i appreciate that because, like I'm, i also like. So Sonic is not part of my history either. I was, i grew up Nintendo, yeah, and then switch to a PlayStation when I was in college. So, yeah, i never really got into Sega games. So like, yeah, i, i Pick up. I mean, i think I'm probably the same way that my kids are with with Sonic. I'm like yeah.
Speaker 4:Man, it's okay, Like you know you don't have that history where you're like no, no, no, let me find you Yeah let me be your like gaming. Some all yay your C-Saron, your guide. Let me show you the best one for you. Yes, yes, nope.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 4:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Mario games. On the other hand, i'm like, yeah, you got to play this game. And they're like, why I'd with play the first one?
Speaker 4:because I told you you have to, because this is your best start, right, oh yeah yeah, amongst those friends with whom I grew up with actually the one who had the 32 X they have a four-year-old who, for the last year and a half at least, has been obsessed with Nintendo, and the Mario in particular.
Speaker 4:Hmm and it has been the most heartwarming thing to watch because, yes, absolutely. He plays Super Mario Odyssey, and watching a at the time three-year-old beat Bowser the final Bowser was like terrifying. Is this what it like? What it looks like when, when humanity replaced what came before? Yeah, like we homo superior has arrived. Yeah, right, right, and, and. But because it's the switch and all of their games are digital. Mario All-Stars is just as new as Mario Odyssey.
Speaker 2:Hmm.
Speaker 4:It's just as new as all the Smash Brothers, and so it's a flat circle for him.
Speaker 3:Hmm.
Speaker 4:And so he actually has Appreciation. I don't know if he loves all of them, but I've definitely seen him be like you know At with a four-year-old's attention span. You know, mario Odyssey, mario Odyssey, i'm done, mario maker, mario maker, mario maker. Yeah so the kids are all right there and I think digital gaming Everything I said about collecting physical and all the rants that I have in the chamber That is a wonderful thing that digital gaming gives us.
Speaker 1:Yeah, agreed, yeah, so I in the choir fly. What is what is? can talk a little bit about that. What is what is absolutely?
Speaker 4:choir fly is, as I sort of alluded to earlier on, a nerd themed acapella group. We have been Around in some form or another since around 2012. I was not in the group then. I joined later, and I don't think there's any original members left at this point. Hmm but you know, 2012 is the right time to be making a firefly reference in choosing your. Your punny acapella name, and so we do. Yet We do covers of like nerdier artists like Jonathan Colton, and they might be giants and weird Al we do Nerdy covers of other songs on.
Speaker 4:my favorite ones to sing at conventions is a cover of Billy Joel That's called the longest line Nice, you know one of those and also just Covers of nerdy music in general. I'm really proud of our arrangement of Good Riddance from Hades or Yeah, things like that, stuff from work. We've been working forever, and by we I mean to me because I this is an arrangement that I took unto myself because I do a lot of the arranging for the group now Covering a lot of music from Steven Universe and Rebecca sugar in particular.
Speaker 2:Hmm.
Speaker 4:Just called the sugar suite hmm, these, these sorts of things, and So, yeah, it used to be a much larger group. Now There's just five of us. We might go to six, i don't know. We're kind of in a little bit of a transition stage, but we usually sing at conventions, in places. We mostly are New York City base, but it's something I really enjoy. And Yeah, you know I haven't talked much about being a musician and that's where I'm being a musician at the moment.
Speaker 1:Cool, That's very cool. Thank you Well. welcome to the show. I'm happy to have you on the show.
Speaker 4:Yeah, thank you for having me. Thank you for allowing me to stamp and ramble stamp about.
Speaker 1:About myself there for so long.
Speaker 4:Let's talk games.
Speaker 1:Yeah, before we get into the topic, i do want to say for a shout out to our patrons on patreon, both to Matt Storm and to Jill Grote They are members of our patreon and you two can join the patreon as well. As little as three dollars a month, you can join our patreon and Be part of a cool community as well part of our discord and To do that you can click on a link in our show notes. So check that out. Talk about games, then, and so the topic I wanted to talk about this week, the topic I wanted to talk about this week, wow was so it's mid-year and I wanted to get everybody's thoughts around.
Speaker 1:What is your game of the year so far like? has it come out? Do you think this is the game of the year already? It's a stamp. This is what I'm, this is what I like. So what's gonna happen? This is the game of the year, or do you think, hey, you know what, it hasn't come out yet, but it's still coming out. So, jeff, i'll start with you, since we're our guest. Do you have a game of the year so far?
Speaker 4:I have a Current game of the year that I won't necessarily say is locked in, but okay, because there's some great stuff coming out that I'm anticipating. But my current one is hi-fi rush. Oh nice, it was a game that came out of nowhere And one of those where and I feel Matt will say very similarly a game where no less than four people Messaged me directly, some of whom I haven't spoken to in forever, and went hey, jeff, jeff, jeff, do you hear about hi-fi rush? It's like it's this animated 3d platformer. That's a rhythm game. You fight to music and there's licensed music in there and Robbie Damon voices the main guy. The voice cast is incredible and it's a. It's like a cartoon, but it's the musical cartoon. Is the whole playing music video? Jeff, have you played hi-fi rush yet? and Yeah, yeah, i. It's all those things and more nice and but also see if stars is coming out.
Speaker 4:This year again My kick started that I'm absolutely So excited for, i'm excited about stray gods to be coming out. You know there, there There's definitely things were. I don't often talk about how much like music and video games is a big deal but it's a big deal for me and My spouse and I did not court through dance dance revolution, but it helped.
Speaker 4:You know, there's absolutely games that are coming out. I'm I very quickly have become very interested in Eternites. Hmm, i'm a big persona fan. I don't do a ton of like dating sims and visual novels, but not because I just like them for any reason. Yeah the level of Delight that they're having with the medium. That's something I also really love in games when video games have a lot of fun with Being video games.
Speaker 4:They don't necessarily have to call out the medium or anything, but you have fun with player expectations. We've all been playing video games. I feel safe, presuming that everyone on this call has been gaming for at least 25 years.
Speaker 4:Yeah pretty pretty yeah yeah, for sure, i that's low balling. I've definitely been gaming for over 30 years, but I like to be. I like to be kind here and You develop expectations, and so things that play with that are a lot of fun. Things that tell stories that Only video games can tell, and those ones that are just like we're gonna switch up the genre because that's the best way to tell this story. Absolutely, i'm into that.
Speaker 4:So those are definitely those ones, but I would say my current also, because I haven't played pizza tower yet. So my current game of the year, of what I've played, is high-fire rush.
Speaker 1:Okay, nice Well, thanks, mike. what about you? I'll go to you next. What is your? do you have a game of the year already? Do you like one that's locked in, or do you think there's a game that's coming out That's gonna take your game of the year?
Speaker 3:I don't know, mario RPGs now got me really. Yeah that's true, yeah, yeah, but I man, it was tough for me to decide because there's so many good stuff that's not already, but for me it was between two, two games, and my runner-up Is gonna be dredge.
Speaker 1:Because that was so much fun.
Speaker 3:I love the story. I loved just. It was just had me captivated Love. It was just so much fun. It was creepy, but then it was also fun and I don't know. There's so much more they can do with the like I said, with the characters and everything so, but I'm gonna say my, my game of the year so far is definitely, without a doubt, resident evil 4 remake.
Speaker 3:Oh Nice and you know, is you know someone who loved the original, just this one, is just Just loving every bit of it and it's just just a ton of fun. Now I can say that because I am saying that, because I I haven't played Dead Space.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 3:So I can't say much about that. I'm only about I don't know about 14 hours into tears of the kingdom. So I barely scratched the surface. But I don't know. I just, to me so far resident evil 4 just loving every, every bit of that. So That's what I'm gonna say. This is my first six months.
Speaker 1:Okay, i came here, very cool. What about you, phil?
Speaker 2:Dredge is definitely in the conversation. For myself as well Is weird as it is to say, and now I don't remember the name of the game that I was recently playing to you. That was that indie game That's kind of got that limbo slash, that limbo feel to it. What the hell's the name of that game? Why am I drawing a blank on it?
Speaker 1:Do you know who produced?
Speaker 2:it now. You know, i don't know that kind of stuff, man. Now we just held like an idiot I was waiting for you to say it's also got like a water thing.
Speaker 4:So it could be like oh, it's Dave the diver which came out yesterday and I'm very excited to play, but I can't like two months now.
Speaker 2:It's. Lana planet, planet of Lana, planet of Lana, okay.
Speaker 1:I got there eventually. That also makes my shortlist. But as of right now, just because I'm super striking.
Speaker 2:While the iron is hot, i am head over heels in love with the oblo and I'm not sure I'm ever gonna quit playing it. Oh yeah, so fun. I have not seen the planet of Lana. I've not seen this yet.
Speaker 4:This looks beautiful.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's absolutely gorgeous, and the animation is spot on the soundtrack is an absolute work of art, for lack of a better term It is. It is well worth the playthrough Fantastic that's going on the wish list and it's on game pass.
Speaker 4:It's on game. Is it still on game pass I think so yeah.
Speaker 2:Game pass is one of the few Game services I'm not on right now.
Speaker 4:I I fell off one of the games. Oh I I fell off hard on Xbox for a while. I'm a PlayStation ecosystem and then PC. I just kind of stumble about like a damn fool. I understand the shortcomings I am attaining and achieving in my life. I feel that makes me multifaceted, not a failure, thank you?
Speaker 1:Hmm, we just judged you pretty hard there, but that's okay, that's totally fine. I've had worse. I will say like for me, i was not an Xbox guy until this new. Until then this new generation came out, and because of game pass like game pass.
Speaker 4:Oh, yeah, yeah, so no game has been great, Yeah.
Speaker 1:so I you know I got a serious ask, because that's my game pass machine.
Speaker 4:So And that's the thing. Like you, you bring Your machine to these things, you bring your ecosystem to your stuff. You know, maybe I'll, i'll, i'll subscribe to game pass at some point, but I'm also real bad at that thing of you know, as long as a backlog as I have that sort of oh, that's really cool, i should subscribe to that. Yeah, three years later, i should subscribe.
Speaker 2:Game pass just adds on to that backlog as well, because you'll find yourself throwing an hour and a half two hours into a game and being like I really like this game. Then the next day you wake up and you start playing with something else because you just want to check it out. And two and a half three hours into it and I really like this game. I'm gonna come back to it.
Speaker 4:Yeah and repeat god, yeah. And starting to get Cover game conventions and getting codes to indie games. I love indie games so much And I wish I could have 20 hours a day with which to give each one of them. But Yeah, no, that's real. Yeah.
Speaker 1:I did ask the community as well. So uh, jill Grote said in our Discord I have a real problem. I have at least 20 things marked for my top 10 and five for my top three. The end of the year is going to be an impossible challenge.
Speaker 1:I don't know For myself I would say like, uh boy, right now it's between Tears of the Kingdom and Diablo four. So those are two games that I didn't think I was gonna like. Diablo, i mean, i like Diablo, I'd like three. you know, and I played Diablo when I was a kid. when I was a kid, i mean when I was in high school and early college. But you know, diablo four really is a lot of fun And Phil and I got to play the other night together and I streamed it. It was just, it was just fun. you know, it was fun that I'm lower than him. He's like what are you 42?
Speaker 2:or something like that I think I'm 47 today.
Speaker 1:Oh okay, Nice Yeah. So I'm like level 18. But yet it was still fun for both of us to play together through my missions.
Speaker 3:I'm sure it was.
Speaker 1:I said you could join us. I said you could join us.
Speaker 3:You said, you said, but you didn't mean.
Speaker 1:No, i come on, you do own the game. You own the game. I know, i know You have. You pay for half of it.
Speaker 3:So it's in my backlog.
Speaker 2:He played for the mic, paid for the unplayed half.
Speaker 1:That's true, that is true, that is true, yeah.
Speaker 4:I mean definitely the price of Diablo four. You know I can afford some games now these days. That's a nice thing of aging for me in my life, but there's a definite I felt like an old man yelling at a cloud of what do they want for a digital version of this game? 69.99.
Speaker 2:Jesus.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 2:But if you really break it down, depending on how much time you spend with it, that's going to be a lot less than a dollar an hour.
Speaker 4:Oh, i completely understand. I believe when I was discussing this with my regular gaming group. You know it's oh, are we making single player? Oh, should we only be playing multiplayer? Whatever, i'm like it's Diablo. If I don't have six characters by the end of the first month, i am losing my touch. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:I make my natural man, sir. That's it.
Speaker 4:I'm not losing my touch. Oh, I have one or two characters that are actually making any progress, but they're there.
Speaker 2:But they're there.
Speaker 4:Listen, it was that kind of thing of you know one of my friends who was much more on top of the previews of what's there And it's like okay, there's necromancers Yeah, do they have corpse explosion? Yes, and I'm getting this game, yeah, yeah, this is. There's so many other things And I will actually the way I've sort of been explaining Diablo for people, for Diablo four is kind of Diablo four is the fifth edition to Diablo threes fourth edition D&D where, for the listen, i played fourth edition D&D.
Speaker 4:I did not dislike it, i did not hate it, and it in fact got several friends of mine who are now avid TTRPG players. Fourth edition was their gateway. It was important. We don't need to keep doing it, though, and three five was wonderful and was what got me into it. It's too fiddly for anyone's good, and so fifth edition does a real nice job of getting story. It lets you fiddle around, but it kind of puts some bumpers and blinders on there, and I think Diablo four does a great job of that, with customization, skill choices, builds and working around what you find.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah. I mean so many dumb builds in Diablo two, That's a good way of putting it, though I do think like it does feel like the fifth edition of D&D, for sure It's a Goldilocks approach. Yeah, yeah. So, I don't know. I mean, like you know, there's a couple games that are coming up this year Like I don't know. What do you guys think about, like if, like Marvel, spider-man two and and the other one Starfield, i don't know, what do you guys think of that?
Speaker 2:I think Starfield could easily join the conversation. Unfortunately, with the lack of a PS5, I'm not going to be seeing Spider-Man two anytime soon.
Speaker 1:Yeah, me too Yeah.
Speaker 4:Well, did they convert that for this year? I thought that was really next year.
Speaker 1:Is it?
Speaker 4:I thought it was.
Speaker 2:Oh, maybe this October.
Speaker 1:It's October this year.
Speaker 2:For now.
Speaker 1:I'll be Yeah.
Speaker 4:No, for now Everything. Look, I am perfectly fine with the game getting delayed. Yeah, me too I will. I've definitely bristled privately, but privately on a very public and a very cosmic scale. I'm absolutely of that mind of. A delayed game is good Eventually, a bad game is bad forever.
Speaker 2:Except for No Man's Sky, apparently.
Speaker 4:Yeah Well, it came out too soon And despite where it is now, everyone knows in quotes, it's a terrible game.
Speaker 2:Yep, exactly, it's the taste that's still in people's mouths about it.
Speaker 4:It's bad forever, no matter how many patches and DLCs you drop on it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, And I find like Starfield to be interesting because, like I watched it, I mean what I just kept thinking? I'm like I mean, isn't this kind of what No Man's Sky does in some ways? I mean I know there's more story behind Starfield, but I don't know. I just it's going to be hard for them not to be compared to No Man's Sky.
Speaker 4:Which could be to their advantage.
Speaker 1:It could be, it could be their advantage, right, yeah, yeah, i don't know. I think I think the one thing that they don't have, that I mean No Man's Sky. I thought was really funny when they were like, yeah, you can see your friends and explore the universe and run into them and see their plans. So they're, they're naming, but you might not see them. Well, yeah, because it wasn't really online, right, it wasn't really multiplayer at first. No it is, but Starfield will never be multiplayer Right? No, i don't think so, yeah.
Speaker 4:Unless they do Starfield on mine, until they really start to Airtime fallout. 76. Yep.
Speaker 1:Yeah, exactly, exactly. So I don't know. I mean I actually don't think. I mean I'm excited for Starfield. I think it looks cool. I'm hopeful that it it, you know, wows everybody. It is like we talked about this last week, like probably be launched with a couple of bugs which we, you know, this, this par for the course.
Speaker 4:Bethesda Yeah, exactly, it's Bethesda, and it's an open world, ambitious game. Yeah, each of those would have some day one bucks.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah for sure. Like I mean you're reaching, yeah, exactly, But I'm in the same boat too with I mean we're talking about delaying games. I'm in the same boat because I worked in it not in game dev, but in app dev and crunch sucks. It sucks a lot, so I hated it so much.
Speaker 4:So and it's. and as far as the consumers concerned, there's no timeline, it all just happened.
Speaker 3:Yeah, And you could be told oh, it took five years to develop.
Speaker 4:Oh, you couldn't get this right in five years. We actually had about 18 hours to work on that one problem.
Speaker 2:Right, thanks, yeah, we didn't know it was there.
Speaker 4:Until you know it was there, right, there's all of those issues And you know the load of bearing coconuts to be colloquial about it And what's what's found in the meantime. And I mean Starfield is definitely one of those where I definitely say it's not my jam but to be fair, it's never been my sandwich. That's sort of like open space exploration. There's small corners of that that appeal to me, but I also I don't typically talk a lot about games that I hate, but I grew up with an with an NES title called Star Voyager. That was the most unguided explore around space, boring as hell game. I, i, i detest it And I'll probably buy it at some point if I find it for $5 or fewer, because far enough for a joke.
Speaker 3:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4:I bought deadly towers for $8.
Speaker 2:That was exactly what I wanted to spend on it.
Speaker 4:Star Voyager can show up in my life, but I could. It's that like this is revolting. More, please, yeah but, i, don't need to spend the $70 on Starfield to have that kind of thing. But I also know plenty of folks who are super excited about it, and they should be.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 4:And so I guess we'll. We'll find out, you know, as this time goes on, we'll find out what else comes out here, and maybe our, maybe our answers will change.
Speaker 1:Jeff will have you back on at the end of the show. We can do a big, big table discussion around the end of the year, absolutely So. that'd be fun. Let's move into games. we're playing then And Jeff again since you are a guest, I'll start with you. What games are you playing All right?
Speaker 4:Well, I've been recording a lot of podcasts this week, which I normally don't know, and yesterday I was on Tales from the Backlog talking about Metroid 2, which I don't know if you know, had several reiterations. Hmm, there was Samus Returns on the 3DS, as well as the very public fan game AM2R, another Metroid 2 remake, and we discussed all of them. So I've for the last month been off and on playing all three of those. Wow, did you play the Game.
Speaker 1:Boy 1, 2?.
Speaker 4:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, it also is on Nintendo Switch Online, So I have the physical version, but I felt like I would more consistently be bringing the switch on subway rides for myself and I was right and So, yeah, i played through it there. I played Samus returns, it, all of that, and so right now I do have a little bit of. I scramble to the finish line Tuesday night and There's a bit of well, what now I guess I play more Metroidvanias. I haven't played haiku the robot yet.
Speaker 1:Let's play the robot. Yeah, might as well that game.
Speaker 3:It is a good game.
Speaker 4:Yeah, I heard great things. I think I watch the speed run of it. Not that long ago It was so cool and absolutely when I know I definitely saw speed run of it because that's where I first heard of the game. And Then, a few weeks later, humble bundle did their Metroidvania bundle and it was on there.
Speaker 1:Oh cool.
Speaker 4:Yeah, it was. It was that it was blasphemous, it was bloodstained. Ritual of the night hollow night It was. It was a hip parade.
Speaker 4:Yeah and I haven't played all of those, so I may use that as a guidepost right now, nice. But but I'm also, you know, as mentioned my spouse and I. Well, i said that she hadn't really played Final Fantasy or many RPGs growing up, and so we usually have some JRPG, some turn-based RPG or something like it that we regularly play together in lieu of having Netflix binges, yeah, and so we finished Yakuza like a dragon a few weeks ago, Nice, and yeah, no, that was incredible. That was my first time playing through it. I that I'm a believer, matt's been trying to get me to play Yakuza forever.
Speaker 1:And he talked about that a lot when he was on the show.
Speaker 4:So oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And so telling them, like my progress and like a dragon, has been that like uh-huh, uh-huh.
Speaker 3:And I'm gonna play Yakuza zero next, matt God.
Speaker 4:Yes, but I'm not playing Yakuza zero right now. What the RPG we're playing is persona for golden.
Speaker 1:Oh nice.
Speaker 4:Yeah, we played through persona five royal and strikers together Absolutely loved it. It was her first persona game. I'd played three and then I played four and I'm getting to read this is the first time I'm replaying a persona game and so She's adjusting to the difference of 2010 verse 2017 game mechanics. Yeah, i mean, we played Final Fantasy 5 earlier this year. It's not that she won't go old school. It was old school within a system, within a franchise, kind of thing.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 4:Yeah, so, but we are Early on, but enjoying it and yeah, that's doing that Getting back into Hades.
Speaker 1:Yeah, he's is good. And what is the second? the second one's coming out next year, right I?
Speaker 4:think. I think so. I think so, yeah, no, hey, hades came up a bunch recently and I'm like I gotta play that again. But as far as new stuff, yeah, like I said before, i picked up Final Fantasy 16 and hopefully in the next week or so I mean, we're coming up on 4th of July weekend The stars will align and I'll get to play. I'll get to play more than what the demo showed me. I love the demo More than just FOMO getting me buying the game, but hopefully that's soon. How do?
Speaker 1:you, how do you play? Because this, this is the struggle that I have. like how do you play an RPG That's a single player together, like do you just take turns and the controller off to each other? Do you just like side car the whole time and like, yes, tell her things like go over there.
Speaker 3:Go check that over there.
Speaker 4:Yes, sarah is one who likes to Complete a game as much as makes sense for her. Hmm, where she will? She'll, within a reason, she'll, hundred percent. A game We played through, final Fantasy 10, and we got all. We got everybody's celestial weapon, we got all of the hidden You know aons and all that. But when one of the trophies was maxed out everybody's fear grid, she went we're done.
Speaker 2:Hmm.
Speaker 4:We're good, hmm, and so a lot of the games. Yeah, i sort of I am, i'm Oracle, i'm the one sitting there either with guidebooks or with previous knowledge of the game or whatever else. It's the kind of thing up, figure it out, figure it out. What am I doing, jeff, you are going for this and doing these things cool, and We have a lot of fun with it.
Speaker 1:Cool, that's cool. Yeah, my wife and I will play games like overcooked together, but she wants to get like all the stars before we move on to the next world, right? She's like no, no, i'm like oh no, you don't play games like I do. You have to complete everything, and I'm not a completionist.
Speaker 4:Oh yeah, yeah, we do two player games in this. Other times We play through. It takes two and I'm looking for secrets everywhere. Yeah we had a great time. It's there just going, is it? this isn't that kind of game, jeff, and I'm sitting there going like I know It's a John Mulaney joke. I see what I'm doing and I also don't want to be here. I Have to. What if I'm eventually right? Sarah, i Never was oh, that's funny.
Speaker 1:Uh, cool. Well, that's very cool. Um, mike, what are you playing right now?
Speaker 3:So right now, let's see I got back in the fall, guys. Nice, Yeah, yeah the lower craft Skin great. Yeah, our craft. And then there was also a cheeseburger skin, so that was, let me get into that. I had some spare, whatever dollar things they call them, show bucks or something.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I'm like, oh, why the heck not? So I got back into that a lot of new levels and stuff. So you know it's the same as it always was and I'm enjoying it. Play, like I said earlier, put a lot more time into tears of the kingdom. Yeah, I made the mistake of trying to fight one of those dragons.
Speaker 1:I saw them and I ran.
Speaker 3:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that wasn't fun, but I you know also spending some more time underground, so that's pretty interesting. Uh, learning a lot of cool stuff. So again it's you know it's more Legend of Zelda. That's, if you played Breath of Wild, you know what to expect. It's a fun game. And then I'm gonna be totally honest with here and I'm hoping nobody laughs. But I mean that means Roger will laugh. But I downloaded the The SpongeBob DLC for power wash simulator.
Speaker 1:Oh, why would I laugh at?
Speaker 4:that Why would I laugh at that, because that's not your gamer.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I Hate it.
Speaker 2:What are you powers washing and what are you power wash underwater?
Speaker 3:Yeah, well, you know it's power wash.
Speaker 2:SpongeBob, they got fire watching power if campfires on SpongeBob.
Speaker 4:So you can't really. It's true, yeah.
Speaker 3:No, i'm. So. Here's what's so aggravating about it is that I'm doing the first level, which is basically the street That they live on, so I'm cleaning SpongeBob's house, patrick's house and Squidward's house. I Am at 99% can't.
Speaker 2:Why not last month of dirt?
Speaker 3:There is a smudge of dirt on Squidward's house above his eye and The Easter Island head. Above the eye but below the unibrow and. You could put it, you could put a ladder there and no matter where you go, you cannot get the right angle to to just to successfully clean it.
Speaker 1:Hmm.
Speaker 3:And I think it's a bug. I think it's stopping me from going to any additional levels.
Speaker 2:Oh, that's brutal. Yeah, it's horrid.
Speaker 1:That's almost as though I'm to the ground and then have to end your game because you can't move.
Speaker 4:So Yeah, and he kind of soft-locking is that. I love when things you're wrong in a game, but soft-locking is always frustrating.
Speaker 3:I'll get out like it's such a small little area and Then it. But if you get too close, your power washer like it folds in, like. So it's like your guy saying, nope, i don't have enough room to spray what so?
Speaker 3:Which sucks too, because this you could tell that there was a lot of a lot of fun, a lot of love put into this, because There's there's minor references to certain episodes. I've seen at least like four or five references to episodes on this, just this one level alone, hmm, and it's pretty cool, you know. But What was once a very relaxing game is now very frustrating and anger-inducing.
Speaker 4:Yep, this is. This is what I meant by like hundred percenting within reason, except this is so much worse, yeah.
Speaker 1:Well, I mean it's appropriate that it's on his house, though on I'm Squidward's house, though, isn't it?
Speaker 3:Yeah, i think your Patrick's house, because it's so dumb messing a spot SpongeBob.
Speaker 1:That was really good, jeff. Anything else, mike?
Speaker 3:No, that's all I've been playing. Okay, you know you can download Diablo 4, though you know that right, yeah, yeah, and you can download out of this world, out of this world and Resident Evil and all that stuff.
Speaker 1:That's true, i could. So. so Jeff, mike and I. So Xbox you can share like accounts one account with with a friend or family.
Speaker 4:Oh yeah.
Speaker 1:So every game I buy Mike has access to and every game that Mike buys I have access to. So nice. Yeah. So you know, i buy the nice fun games and he buys the scary ass games And he's like you gotta play this game and I'm like no, that's not gonna happen. So wait, do you have? you have resony before on Xbox?
Speaker 3:Well, they're just the physical copy.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah. There's other games that I got that outlast and I'm playing that game. Yeah, we tried that once. Thanks, mike. What about you, phil? what have you been playing Diablo? Yeah, that was fun the other night We got a man. That was fun, it was good time, but seriously, that's all that I play these days.
Speaker 2:I barely barely even touching the show. It's just Diablo, diablo, diablo. I got back into a couple of games of Overwatch two nights ago and I actually played once a night too, but Matchmaking is so fucking broken in that game that it just makes it super frustrating. They've kind of had it up a little bit, so it's not as bad, but it's still gnarly, and so I just keep playing Diablo, where it doesn't matter who my opponents are, because they're all from hell.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 4:I love it. What's what? what? uh, you said you have two characters that were like going somewhere. What? what are your main thing right now? idea before.
Speaker 4:I only have my one character, and he's just you know I should say She's a necromancer and I sing things like hold me closer, necromancer, and I do think I'm kind of looking tired I mean, look, to be fair, my, the character that I made specifically for my gaming group, as I am making, i made a war cry barbarian, oh cool. Because it's the closest I get to playing a bard, which I love doing in games, and I've named him Explosivo nice. And so all this to say, rock on.
Speaker 1:That's fun for myself. Again, a lot of Diablo. I also made a necromancer, so that was really fun. We had like a huge army of skeletons that were just you know, love it. Yeah, we're like. We're like, you know, just fear walking and I don't know why anybody would want to take us on, but So that's fun. I like that. I've been playing more tears of the kingdom as well, and then the other game that I've been playing that I'm reviewing is the book thief, book Walker. Keep calm, book thief, the book Walker, thief of tales. So have anyone heard of this game? It's on game passes. Anyone heard of this game? No, this is new to me. Book Walker, texas Ranger.
Speaker 4:Yes, walker, thief of tales Yes.
Speaker 1:So you are a author in this world where authors Like can or like basically contracted for like eternity To work for publishers and like this, this your character, and it is running through like major, like writer's block and you can't get out of it. And I don't know if it's something like Like maybe your last book didn't do so well, but now you have to find a publisher and you're like basically in writer's health for the next 25 years and Like that's what the police, like the police will like call you and like Check up on you. It's all like first person in that perspective, like in this real world. Well, i say real world, but it's like in this like imaginary real world. Yeah, this looks very stylish. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah and then and then.
Speaker 1:So then the other option, though, is that you get you a shadow organization, reaches out to you and says Hey, like we can get you out of your Shackles if you will, if you work for us and jump into books and steal things from the books. So, you, the first book you jump into, you're supposed to steal a portion of immortality. And when that happens, we jump in a book. It's all like an isometric perspective, and you Walk around and get the like, solve little like puzzles, and there's some RPG elements to you, have to do some crafting and some fighting as well, and you are not a character in the book, but all the other characters in the book don't. They don't realize that they're not real, right, they just think that they are real. But then, when you run into characters from the book, they kind of freak out because you look weird, because you don't, because you, because you're not, you're not a character, you're just like some thief in this, in this book. So it's really cool. And then, and then there's a lot of like different, like Forking moments where, like, you can do this or you can do this, and like, obviously, depending on your, your decision is going to drive, like what, what the outcome is going to be. So I really like it There's. The only thing I will like to do is to do this.
Speaker 1:I'm playing with an Xbox, i'm playing with the controller and there's a lot of times where my character will walk up to something and it will like I wanted to highlight whatever like he's supposed to interact with. But I have to be really precise and if I'm off just a little bit, like, it won't connect and then I have to like move my character, try to connect, like, try to walk in front of like an item to pick it up. You know, it feels like that wouldn't be a problem on PC when it's like point and click, but with the, the, the sticks, the control sticks, like it, it just doesn't play as well. It's, it's super minor, but Can you plug a mouse in? I don't know, i didn't try on the Xbox, i don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 4:Huh, i don't know, i don't know I don't know, i don't know.
Speaker 1:Huh, i think it's well. It's on Game Pass. I don't know if it's on Ultimate Game Pass though, too, unlike PC, it might be so. But yeah, i'm enjoying it. It's. It's an interesting, it's something. I've never played anything like this before, so it's a really cool concept and, yeah, plenty of opportunities to play through again.
Speaker 4:Yeah, i'm looking at the Steam page for it right now. I'm getting almost like a mix of HD Mist meets Planescape, torment vibes.
Speaker 1:Yeah yeah, yeah, that's a good description.
Speaker 4:Yeah, i'm into that. Alright, and it's currently part of a bundle with Final Station on sale and cool. Yeah Yeah, book Walker isn't on sale on Steam, but Final Station is on so much sale that if you get it in a bundle, it's essentially like getting it for free.
Speaker 1:Yeah, i mean now that you say like it's Mist, it is very Mist, like it feels very like inspired by Mist, now that you say that.
Speaker 4:So Anything where it's like you can enter the world in books. I'm like yeah. I hate how sold I am on this. Yeah, yeah and now watching this and hearing you describe it like this looks like a. Yeah, this looks like one of those games where there's definitely going to be some weird spots. I'm going to get frustrated, but I'm ultimately going to be so much more excited that this just exists.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah it's cool and it's on Game.
Speaker 4:Pass too.
Speaker 1:I know you don't have that chef, but it is on.
Speaker 4:Game Pass? No, but many other people do and they should know that. And if they have Game Pass, get it.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 4:Don't spend money like I am.
Speaker 1:Yeah well it's funny about Starfield too, because that's also coming to Game Pass. When you said it's $70, i'm like, yeah, not for me, but you don't know those games that make you go.
Speaker 4:Look, there were when this also speaks to my age and my retro rose colored glasses. When PlayStation Plus did the whole extra deluxe electric Boogaloo, purple monkey dishwasher, everything else There was, you know. Oh, and you'll get monthly PS classics from PS1 and PSP. Okay, now that's kind of cool. I do. Playstation 1 is probably my favorite home console. What's in the first round of games? that intelligent cube, damn it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, intelligent cube, that game is not good. I love that game. It's not good. It's not good.
Speaker 4:I love it those are two different things, but also. I got Returnal and Sekiro for free when.
Speaker 3:I subscribed to that.
Speaker 4:And actually also Death Stranding Director's Cut, which I'm a huge Metal Gear solid fan, where I think honestly to go back to an earlier question, if there's any franchise I collected for it's.
Speaker 3:Metal Gear.
Speaker 4:Most of my PSP collection are all the Metal Gear titles, so Death Stranding is its own weird wander off. But hey, if I'm getting as part of a package, i'll check it out eventually.
Speaker 2:What would you say your favorite Metal Gear is, if I can ask, Snake Eater.
Speaker 4:I have great love and appreciation for so many of the other ones, but if I have to pick one, snake Eater, snake Eater was three. Snake Eater was three. Yeah, the one that they're remaking right now, metal Gear Solid, delta I think three is probably my favorite as well. It's such a cool, self-contained story. It was one of the first times I became aware of boss fights. That left me holding my breath. The amount of interaction you could have with the world and the payoff that it had, but not in any sort of like. The Grey Warden will remember this kind of way, but in the weirdest, most mundane ways. I don't know. It's. It's up there for. It's a top five for me.
Speaker 1:Hmm, i will say My first mental, the first Metal Gear I played was on the NES, and mine too. It blew my mind when you could do the cigarette smoke and like you could see the.
Speaker 1:Yeah oh my goodness, but then it would take away health from you too. I just, I just like I Don't know. it was just like for me, i think. I was like I Don't know if great, or something like that, and I was like, oh my goodness, this is amazing. I can't believe that. Wasn't that? I mean for it, for it for this time It was pretty amazing, and Roger started ripping heaters and blowing smoke everywhere just to see Taking them rips. That's right, that's right.
Speaker 4:I mean, you gotta compare. Also, you think about the fact that Metal Gear for the NES was the Inferior clone of what was originally envisioned on the MSX and it still did all of these really cool forward thinking things like.
Speaker 4:I was probably. I was an elementary school when it was, when I was aware of it being out and my older brother and my father were playing the hell out of it And I would try to stumble my way through it and I was so enamored with it And so, yeah, when Metal Gear Solid came out for the PS1, i lost my mind. I saw like a cover feature for it on PlayStation magazine And I'm like they've still got the cardboard box. That's how you know a Metal Gear fan from the from the old days
Speaker 4:kind of thing Yeah and so, yeah, no, absolutely, it was so cool what they were doing, that and they never stopped being weird.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and it was super hard to like. Oh yeah Yeah, The NES game was very hard So.
Speaker 4:I've never beaten it.
Speaker 1:I haven't either. We got I think. I mean it feels like we got close, but Well, i don't know, who knows, then maybe we didn't get close but They. We sunk a lot of time into that game.
Speaker 4:Yeah, I feel like nowadays It's beatable. I just haven't taken the time.
Speaker 1:Yeah, also I do feel like my like the games that I did beat when I was a kid, like I beat Mike Tyson's punch out and now I don't. I can't beat Mike Tyson to save my life. So, like I don't know, i don't know if, like, maybe my motor skid, like. But it's weird, i watch my wife play games, like she plays Super Mario World the six coins, whatever.
Speaker 4:I think the six golden coins Mario on the Mario land to six golden coins on the Game Boy.
Speaker 1:Yes, she played that game so much as a kid because that was like one of the only game boy games They had. Like it is crazy to watch her plays because it's all memory, muscle memory. She's like, yeah, you know, like I'm just like I Can't do that. I can't like I've never played the game before, but like it's a really fascinating to watch her play that game. It's in almost like like speedrunning. It's pretty fun to watch, yeah.
Speaker 4:Well, like you said, it's it's muscle memory, it's it's rhythm memory. Yeah, yeah, i would imagine a lot of those games you beat as a kid. You could get back to that same level and much quicker than you realize. You just need to shake off whatever Kind of drift has happened whether you want to is completely up to you. Yeah, yeah, but yeah.
Speaker 1:I struggle with others. I struggle with like Super Mario Kart, though Like my mind can't, can't Do like you know, cuz like now you play Mario Kart and you're like oh yeah, i got, like I the input, like there's not much leg right, like I get it, and now when you play the older, i don't get this anymore. What's going on?
Speaker 4:Oh yeah, an absolute input lag on HD TVs has done more to damage us than we realize.
Speaker 3:I.
Speaker 4:Have gotten so weird about it because again I play rhythm games.
Speaker 1:I have to.
Speaker 4:DDR past behind my couch.
Speaker 1:I'm gonna.
Speaker 4:DDR at home still. And yeah, no, trying to get that right is, oh, it's so frustrating. So, yeah, i think that's part of it too. It messes you up more than you realize.
Speaker 1:Yeah, agreed, all right. Well then, let's move into our final segment, and this is where we get to stick it to the man and make Phil play games in a segment that we call tails from the e-shop. But this week, phil, i feel like a Few. You got off easy. So, mike, do you want to read the game in the description of what we had Phil play this week?
Speaker 3:Sure, which, which actually you've inspired me maybe meant the next game I'll have is that game. Stick it to the man.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah. I get in poked with a bunch of sticks You actually have to simulator.
Speaker 4:It's the weirdest level of Katamari ever. You roll around the man.
Speaker 1:But when you say roll around is not actually in the game, it's actually put sticks on you and then just roll around while you hold your switch. She would, i come up with.
Speaker 2:It's like cleaning up garbage on the side of the highway.
Speaker 4:Exactly, listen if Nintendo can make us do, if, if anyone can make us do community service through video games.
Speaker 2:It's Nintendo, and this is why I don't like Nintendo. I've done enough community service in my life.
Speaker 4:All community service. I've done, i know I've earned.
Speaker 1:Just a side note, which, if we made him play, what was that game called? toilet paper roll or something like that, or Yeah, yeah, i pass paper some shit like that's the toilet paper
Speaker 2:something Yeah.
Speaker 1:But, you had to, yeah, so, like they encouraged you to take your Joy-con and stick it into a roll of toilet paper and then roll the toilet paper on a piece of cardboard and And as you do, obviously then the carrot, the roll, the toilet paper on the TV would roll along. It was really weird. It was a strange game.
Speaker 3:Yeah, think of it like a 2d marble, madness. Yeah yeah, toilet paper that you are. It was physically like lifting a piece of cardboard and the toilet paper is rolling on it.
Speaker 4:Yeah, Nintendo lab will got real lazy in the third wave.
Speaker 2:By your own stuff will just give you the game, Yeah yeah, you kids got toilet paper tubes.
Speaker 4:You've been using them to send secret messages and bought your siblings with them, pretending their lightsabers for the joy-con in it The best control method since Tony Hawk's gate.
Speaker 1:Actually was not bad, right, phil, i think? are you ever saying like actually he controlled pretty well, it's a.
Speaker 2:I mean you could, obviously when you cheated and just like held on the roll It's about paper like the game was far easier, but like Effective.
Speaker 4:That's incredible.
Speaker 1:There's the kind of stuff that we make him play, but this week what we're nice to you, phil.
Speaker 3:So I felt bad. I felt bad for the guy from that last game in the last game.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that was not good.
Speaker 3:The game we gave this week was guns, gore and cannoli. Welcome to Thugtown circa 1920 to hide a prohibition. Prepare yourself for a non-stop action packed completely over the top fest pace platform game set against the gangster Heyday of the roaming 20s. Lose yourself in an exciting, elaborate tale of the underground and underworld. Should I just switch over to a 1930s?
Speaker 2:type.
Speaker 3:I'll bet you answer witness at first hand, the rise and fall the criminal mastermind. This is survival horror, wise guy style.
Speaker 1:Capiche The game story you have to read it like that now, because it sounds so much better.
Speaker 3:Okay. The game tells the story of any cannoli and his mob family, set in the fictional Thugtown circa 1925. The hide a prohibition But eat the city overrun by zombies. There's this dark story of conspiracy in betrayal. Unravel the sneaky mafia ways and government conspiracy while you try to look for your lost pal and for answers for the zombie outbreak. Action packed gameplay. Prepare yourself for the non-stop action pack. Completely over the top platform game Where you have to fight, shoot last and kick your way through a deeply ungrossing story. Not only will you have to take on the undead, but also rivaling gangsters and the army trying to cover things up beautifully. Hand-drawn 2d graphics and animations. Step into the atmosphere called shady world, built by HD hand-drawn 2d graphics. Experienced, fluid animations and cinematic style cutscenes. Immersive world and period. Despite prohibition and imminent depression, people are ready to drink themselves to undead. Every inch of the game is like a picture straight from the prohibition era. The cars, the furniture, the speakeasy clubs, the music and the weaponry reflect the turbulent days of the wrong 20s.
Speaker 4:Okay, and that's it very nice, very nice That was very well done, mike.
Speaker 1:I would have gave up halfway through. dude Mike, you stuck with it.
Speaker 4:Good job, all right now I'm gonna need you to give me two more.
Speaker 3:I need one that's a little more international news and then we're one where you're just kind of throwing it away a little bit Like give me, like you can pause it, just give me a lot of energy on each one Okay. I only have two in 1920s news guy and terrible bane. You can do a lot with 1920s news guy.
Speaker 4:You get that mid-Atlantic and you get that good nasal going like no, like I hear you got it Just like joking around a voice direction. It's funny, or that way.
Speaker 1:Oh, that's awesome. Uh, phil, what, what? what did you think of this game?
Speaker 2:Um, i did a little bit of research after I reached my stopping point in the game And, from what I can tell, i've got two levels left. If that doesn't tell you anything, oh wow.
Speaker 1:Wow, you played a lot.
Speaker 2:I probably put five hours into this. I adore it. I think it's absolutely wonderful. I think it's charming. It is really well written. Again, the soundtrack is just that roar in 20s type of a soundtrack to it. It feels good. It plays really good in my opinion. Uh, it's. It's a little, i won't say unforgiving, but it's definitely not an easy ride through. Um, the animation of the graphics are absolutely jaw dropping for what they are. The voice acting is pretty spot on. Um, you fight some giant radioactive Uh mice at one point in the middle of the sewers and that part got a little bit weird to me. But it all works out because you're also fighting the undead, including undead strippers that carry whips. So there's oh, there's that facet of it. Um, i'm saying I'm a lot because I've I've got words and I've got thoughts, but I don't know how to put them together at this exact moment because I had such a good time with this game like I'm gonna go back.
Speaker 2:I'm gonna finish this game, i'm gonna wrap it up. There's no doubt about it Incredible I think. It's currently 399 in the e-shop. I played it on the xbox because it's my, my platform of choice. It's back up to 10 dollars on the Are on xbox, but it is still only four dollars on the e-shop. I highly recommend if you are a fan of. I believe I read somebody else compared to like a mega man contra style game, which is pretty accurate, with the exception of you don't get weapons that do more damage to different bosses at different points.
Speaker 4:But But it's a run-in guy Yeah, it's a side scrolling running gun and it's it's very, very gratifying.
Speaker 2:I I dig it a lot.
Speaker 1:Well, i'm glad That you enjoyed Your time this week, because I don't know if you're gonna have that seam.
Speaker 2:Well, I wanted to get my opinion because I think he played a little bit of it too.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, I, absolutely I wanted to, i wanted to, but I know you have it, and why didn't you play it?
Speaker 3:Yeah, roger, me too, i'm level four with Phil so.
Speaker 2:I'm level 47. You don't have Diablo four as an excuse.
Speaker 1:Roger, i'm reviewing book walker.
Speaker 4:What are you saying? You don't want to be fighting the forces of the undead? Yeah, were you too good. You're too good to be going. They are rising out of the ground. We don't know how many there are. We don't know how long they're supposed to be dead. We put them in the ground. They come back up. We got to take them out. You're sitting. You're not good enough to be doing this. Come on, come on.
Speaker 1:I think you had me at undead strippers actually, so I mean yeah, yeah and I didn't even mention the jiggle physics. For everybody Equal opportunity yeah, uh, mike, yeah, what did you think of this game?
Speaker 3:I I'm along the same lines as Phil here. I really enjoyed it. And here's the thing is that I I Knew about this game before, but I really didn't want to play it because, i'll be honest, i am not a big fan. I think I've said this before I am not a big fan of that style of animation or where it looks like a flash animation.
Speaker 3:Yeah, it's got that, the that feel yeah, so I'm not a big fan of that, but I gave it a try and I it really is. I mean it's, it's Well drawn, the the art is great, the gameplay is great. It's it's a slower contra, which I liked. I you might even say it's closer to like metal slug.
Speaker 4:Yeah, yeah, certainly the proportions of the characters. I'm watching the animation right now because this is the first time hearing of the game. It's got a bit of an alien hominid kind of animation style, but a little yes but a little slower.
Speaker 3:Yep, Yeah more methodical and I like the slower pace of it and that you know, because I'm old and my brain don't work. No good, so and it's. But yeah, it's definitely, and I, from what I, what I've read about it It's, it's a lot more fun when you're playing local multiplayer.
Speaker 2:Yeah, i did see that it had a Yeah you can play with as well, which is something I'd like to check out, but that means I'd have to make three friends, and I don't feel like doing that.
Speaker 1:Local, you can't play online.
Speaker 2:No online.
Speaker 1:No uh.
Speaker 4:Well, it's interesting because you normally hear it the other way around these days.
Speaker 1:Yeah, this is an older game, though, isn't it right?
Speaker 2:2017.
Speaker 4:Yeah, I think maybe at least a sequel to do it as well. It can't be 2017. It's gotta be, uh.
Speaker 2:I think it is 2017 or so.
Speaker 4:Yeah, december 21st 2017, according to the Nintendo eShop.
Speaker 2:Okay, remember my friend Andy playing it.
Speaker 3:StYeah.
Speaker 1:Wow, they did. Yeah, they did come out the sequel. I didn't know, i didn't only yeah.
Speaker 2:But definitely not. If you're a fan of that style of game, you're not gonna go on with it, even at $10.
Speaker 3:Yes, but yeah that's fine.
Speaker 1:Yep, cool. So, as tradition, we have two doors for you. So, mike, do you want to read what's behind door number one? the description of the game for Phil for door number one.
Speaker 3:All right. So, phil, remember I said I felt sorry for you. Yeah, now you don't now I don't know, okay, here is the name of the game. Here We go. Oh, by the way, phil, do you like dead space?
Speaker 2:Like the game dead space or a bunch of space with a bunch of dead shit.
Speaker 4:Yeah.
Speaker 2:I do like the game dead space.
Speaker 3:Deeth. so if you like dead space and you're gonna enjoy Kirkland dead space, Oh, like the bullshit generic stuff that comes from yeah, like the generic Yeah, the Walmart Yeah. so the game I picked for you, here we go D deep space.
Speaker 1:Oh deep space.
Speaker 3:I'm not done, roger.
Speaker 1:Oh.
Speaker 2:Dammit the same people that made the fucking stupid Next game here we go.
Speaker 3:Well, i don't think it's the same people. I don't think it's the same people, but I have to. At least let me read the title And the description.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, you might change your mind, phil, you might change.
Speaker 3:The graphics don't look too bad Okay the other game. Deep space Action, fire, sci-fi game 2023, shooter strike simulator, alien death ultimate games.
Speaker 2:It's definitely the same people. There's no chance in hell. It's not the same fucking people.
Speaker 3:Right now it's on sale for a dollar ninety nine, was that the description? No, that's the title.
Speaker 4:I'm looking at it right now. Oh my god.
Speaker 3:I'll say, i'll say it one more time for those who really want to download deep space colon. Yeah, deep space, colon aliens, alien fire, sci-fi game, 2023, shooter, strike simulator, alien death, ultimate games.
Speaker 4:The punctuation is important because it's the only time it occurs.
Speaker 3:Yes, okay, you ready, phil. Okay, i could tell you are.
Speaker 2:Too busy chewing on my bottom lip trying to decide how angry I'm right now, do you?
Speaker 4:want me to make this dramatic, i will make this dramatic.
Speaker 2:It's not the same company, from what I'm looking up, oh, which means I don't know you out.
Speaker 1:Yeah, you don't, yeah, okay.
Speaker 3:Uh, deep space is a highly interactive game doubt with stunningly realistic graphics. Mmm an eerie atmosphere created by sound and gameplay. Players navigate through level based sections of the spaceship, completing missions and fighting monsters. See, that's not so bad.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's not so bad. Yeah, completing levels and fighting monsters like air.
Speaker 3:Yeah, it kind of takes a turn after this. The game starts when the protagonist wakes up in a sarcophagus. Okay, okay and tries to understand what happened.
Speaker 1:As one does when you.
Speaker 4:Repacking this sarcophagus.
Speaker 1:How the fuck did I get here? coffee coffee Wrong turn to elbow curfew, that's I Parked my shuttle.
Speaker 3:The fight for survival becomes intense right from the first level, the protagonist not understanding what happened at the bow of the ship During his exploration, he is in search for ammunition, health reserves and nodes which are used both to unlock special doors and to upgrade weapons and suit. Oh, he begins to explore the space of the ship he is in and to look for ways out of the situation. Okay, during his exploration, he meets a multitude of monsters in the rooms that he must defeat in order to open the next one. So does he have to defeat the room or does he have to do?
Speaker 3:during his exploration, he meets a multitude of monsters in the rooms that he must defeat in order to open the next one. The rooms must be defeated. That's right. That's, that's what I thought.
Speaker 4:What is that? is you do 2023 shooter strike to take them down?
Speaker 3:Are you teach them to love? do you do trade game? is simulator alien?
Speaker 4:Oh yes, Yes, is it real alien? No, it's a simulator.
Speaker 3:And don't worry about it. We can't afford real alien.
Speaker 4:Listen, we spent all of our budget on that action fire sci-fi in the first five minutes.
Speaker 2:You're just getting simulator alien. Okay. You guys might think a sarcophagus is cheap, but it's not.
Speaker 3:Our budget was.
Speaker 4:That is our death. Ultimate games right there.
Speaker 3:Let's see He also meets the main monster, which is the most difficult to defeat.
Speaker 1:I would hope so. Imagine if he wasn't the main, like if the main boss was the easiest to defeat.
Speaker 4:Gotta flip it around a little yeah.
Speaker 3:In the third part of the game.
Speaker 1:I thought we just met the main boss. I thought we just beat him. It was really difficult to beat.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there's more escape the exploding ship Oh.
Speaker 4:Oh, right, right, right, right, right, yep The multitude of monsters in the innumerable rooms that must be defeated. Main monster, third part of game.
Speaker 3:Let's see. And the third part of the game is the escape from the damaged ship by means of a smaller ship.
Speaker 4:I heard he made the ship himself out of a bigger ship.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 2:I'm just gonna go ahead and fly my really large ship through the small ship to get the fuck out of here.
Speaker 3:This entire game.
Speaker 4:It's, it's at least. it is more than one room, it is at least two rooms, okay we don't know how many multitudes of monsters.
Speaker 3:But not everything is as easy as it seems. As The portently yeah, here's the here's now. Here's here's the part where they spoil everything Not everything is as easy as it seems, as the protagonist is prevented by something from doing this.
Speaker 4:Oh.
Speaker 3:Yeah, we don't know what's preventing it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, how can I find out? Yeah, the game is, what is how you?
Speaker 3:can find out yeah, you, and you can find out the end of the tense story only by trying the game.
Speaker 1:You know why cuz nobody streamed this game.
Speaker 4:I would like to point out that. I know it's not part of the official description, but I would like to do what Nintendo e-shop is telling me after that, and it's read less.
Speaker 3:Oh, phil, if you haven't looked at any pictures, it almost looks like doom.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 4:This is a beta build of doom doom 3. Yeah, yeah, okay, yeah.
Speaker 3:I'd say, yeah, they're doing three, kind of looks like it's 2023.
Speaker 1:I.
Speaker 3:Know it's 2023. So why, are we still seeing these?
Speaker 4:Yeah, is this a game that was made for the distant future of 2023?.
Speaker 2:Well, they're playing in a sequel. It's gonna be a yearly release, like Madden. Oh, oh yeah.
Speaker 1:Do I need to have played the first 2022?
Speaker 2:I'm gonna be lost. They go ahead and tap Christ on the shoulder and look like the most shooters right here.
Speaker 1:That's how you know where you ended up because you didn't play 2022. If you played 2022, you'd be like oh yeah, it's makes sense.
Speaker 2:It's a good call back. Rami's movies with the big convert or the big Cadillac that's in the back.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah, you know what? to hell with it.
Speaker 2:I hate myself enough this week, let's go ahead and do it Wow.
Speaker 1:You're gonna go with it. That's amazing. No, it's not gonna be amazing.
Speaker 2:I'm never gonna know what it's like flying a small ship to a big ship. I'm not gonna make it that far because the game's gonna piss me off long before that point, so we never even know how this ends.
Speaker 1:But I want to know the only way you know how the story ends is if you try it, if you experience it yourself.
Speaker 3:I'm a tense story, you must find out the end and please let us know next week which of these adjectives actually In the title actually Like dad we have all of these words here and it is a one out of five.
Speaker 4:Yeah, space.
Speaker 2:The answer is action death, fire, death is the one that's gonna describe the entire game.
Speaker 1:Oh my god, 2023, maybe, maybe that was 2022. What was the other game, mike, that he was behind door number two?
Speaker 3:I Can I can say what it's, man, i really would like to keep it, let's keep it for another, for another, another day.
Speaker 1:Let's keep it on it, oh dear.
Speaker 4:Oh.
Speaker 1:Okay, well, that that wraps up a show. Before we head out, though, why don't I tell people how they can Find us and get a hold of us on the social media? So, jeff, how can people find you and follow you and check out the work that you do?
Speaker 4:Well, there's two great ways to follow me. You can follow fun and games podcast at Fun and games pod across most social media. Matt is currently 80% helming the Twitter account because their Twitter account got suspended because They dunked on a transfer by think and this is what happens.
Speaker 4:But fun and games pod across most of those things. You can also find fun and games at our networks website, certain povcom. You can also find a permanent invite link to our discord server there. I'm often on there. If you want to follow me in particular, what I'm up to, what I'm doing in the strange Journey that is life. I am easily found on most social media, at Jeff makes noise, jeff is spelled GEO FF. Jeff makes noise nice Phil.
Speaker 1:How can people find you?
Speaker 2:I'm that rare occasion I'm on Twitter. I'm can be found at the letter B, now 23. not the word, the letter, but the letter, the letter, the letter, the letter the letter incredible.
